LAVA-Laboratory for Visionary Architecture, who designed the Beijing Water Cube and received the prestigious Atmosphere Award at the 9th Annual Venice Biennale, joined the Fraunhofer Institute’s research project “Future Hotel” and presented the future hotel showcase room in Duisburg, German in 2008. The ultimate objective for this project was to meet the expectations and requirements of hotel guests using future technology.
The future hotel showcase room, as we can see in the picture below, looks like a simple streamline white box, providing a contemporary atmosphere.
Although the future hotel room gives us a simple impression, it integrates advanced technologies and services which can support a new quality of individual control for guests. There are some secrets that you cannot tell only from the picture. First, the bed is not only comfortable, but also automatic movable from left to right, rocking the guests to sleep. Second, there are smart sensors under the floor, monitoring the guests’ heart rates and temperature. Third, different from the tradition hotel room lighting, there won’t be any light switches in the hotel room. With the function of underground intelligent sensors, the guests can change the color of the lighting from white to green, blue, purple, dark and so on base on his/her mood.
It is said that we will have the opportunity to check in this Future Hotel Room in 2020. Will the simple white box be the trend in 10 years? Especially, many top brand hotels, such as Mandarin Oriental and Four Seasons, are now emphasizing how a hotel can integrate the design with the local culture.
